Diversity, Inclusion and Equity at Rubica
We are entrepreneurs, dreamers, pragmatists, computer scientists, cryptologists, and above all, cybersecurity experts. We are a close-knit, diverse team that appreciates unique perspectives and authenticity, rewards creativity and adaptiveness, and strives to empower both our employees and our customers.
We believe diversity and inclusion is an imperative, not a “nice to have.” We are committed to retaining, developing, and promoting diverse individuals throughout all departments at Rubica without the practice of tokenism.
Our current environment
It is important for us to continuously cultivate a culture of belonging for every individual on our team. We believe building an inclusive culture is an ongoing effort, never done.
Here’s how we are doing:
- As of this publishing, 43% of our team is comprised of people of color (POC), and we have 30% gender diversity.
- Compared to 2017, this represents a 34% increase in racial diversity and a 19% increase in gender diversity over two years.
- We believe this is a visible result of our recruiting and retention efforts that focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Our goal is for our team to comprise of 50% POC and 50% gender diversity by 2021.
Rubica’s DEI roots
Since the start of the company, Rubica has completed a yearly survey to take the company pulse on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). DEI experts outside of Rubica collect survey results and they help us understand what we are doing well and where we need to improve to help build the inclusive culture we want.
Based on our recent DEI survey results we learned that our biggest opportunity for growth is to provide clarity around the importance of integrating DEI efforts into Rubica’s foundation and communicate how this impacts employees on an individual level.
Our aspirations and team culture of inclusion
Rubica has an in-house DEI committee (of which we’re apart of) focusing on a roadmap for building DEI in practice as well as in policy. We’re actively seeking new ways to build this into the foundations of what we do every day for ourselves and our customers.
The Rubica team has been involved in the community since the beginning of 2019. We’re very aware of the cybersecurity skills gap and thus wanted to think of unique ways to partner with community organizations. We decided to create our first high school internship program to involve students in cybersecurity safety in mobile game apps. It’s our way of making sure future generations are interested in STEM and the technologies that feed our industry.
Our Rubica team is also involved in various community engagement organizations such as Washington Technology Industry Association (WTIA), Association of Latino Professionals For America (ALPFA) Seattle Chapter, and sponsoring Future for Us. Employees across different departments have volunteered to participate in panels, workshops and speaking opportunities at nonprofits like The Girl Scouts and Seattle Children’s Hospital.
